Baptism Is...

Rev. Henry Bartsch

Acts 18:24-19:7 and Romans 6:1-4

Our gracious Father has it in his heart that his people grow in the knowledge of Christ and our life in him, and this embraces knowing of our Christian baptism. You might think baptism is not a help to the Christian life. It is.

God's Blessing of Family

Rev. Henry Bartsch

Genesis 50:22-26

In Genesis, the blessing of God is mentioned no less than 70 times. It means “well-being,” “to be strengthened.” When God blesses a person he or she is enriched, benefited, strengthened; and the common result is happiness & satisfaction. How do we see God’s blessings in Genesis 50:22-26? One way is the family.

Jesus, the Death-Conqueror

Rev. Henry Bartsch

John 11:17-44

In this passage, we see Christ’s power and consequent glory in the face of that which none of us can overcome on our own – sin & death. We see so much sin around us that we often think it is the end. But if sin had the final say we would live in a world as Milton fittingly wrote, “Where all life dies, and death lives.” But sin and death does not have the final say for where it abounds, the grace of God much more abounds, and God sent his Son into the world who is life eternal.

Suffering and Christian Baptism

Rev. Henry Bartsch

1 Peter 3:18-22

Jesus said in Matthew 5:11, "Blessed are you when others persecute you on my account." Believers who suffer either by persecuation or other trials can be tempted to lose heart and wonder if God is our Father. However, God always keeps his children. Looking to all the pomises signified at our baptism we are encoraged to presevere. Remembering our baptism reminds us that the God who has redeemed us will keep us.

Sermons on the Sacraments: God's in Grace has Given Us Promises

Rev. Henry Bartsch

Genesis 17:1-11; Romans 4:11

When God revealed himself signs attended that revelation. God, however, not only spoke his word to mankind he also made covenants with us; and every time God made a covenant with his people he sealed it with a sign to show he would be faithful to his promises. The Sacraments of the church are signs and seals. They point us to the gospel of Christ and assure that God will keep all his gospel promises. This is good news.

A Grand History

Rev. Henry Bartsch

Genesis 49:1-28

Before he died Jacob gathered his sons around him to bless them in God's name. These blessings were also prophecies of God's grace and judgment upon the tribes of Israel. The main message of this passage messianic. Both the blessing and judgements Jacob pronounced pointed forward to Jesus and salvation by his grace.

God in Grace has Given Us Signs

Rev. Henry Bartsch

Romans 4:9-12; Hebrews 1:1-3

Does Jesus give less light to the world now that he has risen and ascended? No! He is still the sufficient light of the World! Can saving faith still come to us even though he is gone to heaven? Yes, he still speaks, calls, and redeems. How? By his Word and his sacrament. The sacraments are signs, aids to help us see and believe upon Jesus Christ for our salvation.
